Sustainability plays a key role in cement but also in refractories. The cement industry is working very actively on emission reduction, where RHI Magnesita solutions have been employed to assist in achieving this target.
RHI Magnesita is contributing to environmental sustainability in several ways:
The extraction and processing of the raw material necessary of our refractories accounts for the majority of RHI Magnesita’s CO2 emissions. To tackle that, our R&D has developed a way to recycle secondary raw material effectively and introduced a new and sustainable product line for the cement industry: the ANKRAL LC-series!
The circular economy approach starts and ends in the kilns of our clients. Used refractory bricks at the end of their service life become a valuable raw material source.

Reconditioning Treatment
The LC-series product portfolio currently consists of three products for application under different operational conditions.
To produce the main component of rotary kiln bricks, the raw material magnesite is burned normally at 1750° C, where it dissociates to MgO and CO2 and forms dead burned magnesia (DBM).
By using recycled material instead of primary DMB, 17 to 20% of the emissions in this process step can be avoided. This results in an overall reduction of the product carbon footprint (PFC) of the final product by 12 to 14%.
The calculations on product carbon footprint are assured by Denkstatt GmbH, a consulting company for sustainability and environment.
